For five months of the year – during the Wet Season - the Peppimenarti aboriginal community is cut off from the wider world of the Northern Territory, accessible only by plane. Situated amongst the flood-planes of the Daly River region, 220 miles (320 kms) south west of Darwin, it has developed its own distinctive artistic practice based on both painting and fibre-weaving work. Since its inception in 2001, the art centre has been a particular focus for the women of the community, with leading artists – including Regina Pilawuk Wilson, Margaret Gilbert, Margaret Kundu and Kathleen Korda being included in important touring exhibitions in the US and Canada, as well as across Australia.
