Cacti & Tropical Hibiscuses Make Ambiguous Table Arrangements: Rob Tucker, NYC
Rebecca Hossack Gallery is proud to present Rob Tucker: Cacti and Tropical Hibiscuses Make Ambiguous Table Arrangements, a solo show featuring new works by New Zealand based artist Rob Tucker. The exhibition will commence with an opening reception on Wednesday, May 14 and will close on June 6, 2014.
A rising star of the New Zealand art scene, Rob Tucker has been showing work consistently since he was 18. Now 26, his compelling images of ships and kitchen scenes -bold and playful - have already won international acclaim. He has been exhibited with great success in the U.S., Asia, Australia, and the UK, and was recently featured at Art Melbourne on the New Generation platform, a showcase for emerging artists of note. He also was awarded the Royal Overseas League of Visual Arts Travel Scholarship, and has twice been a Traveling Show Finalist at the Wallace Art Awards of New Zealand.
Tucker's technique combines richly worked painting and mark making on board with the beguiling sheen of an almost lacquered finish. As he explains:
"I like to celebrate and glorify the subject of living in my naïve, organic style of painting. My work is heavily layered…I almost sculpt an impression of paint and mixed media."
Heavily influenced by the iconic still life paintings of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, Tucker sees his completed works as constantly interacting with their surroundings, and thus taking on new forms. This will be his first solo show in New York.
