The Hypatia Collection: Nikoleta Sekulovic
The Hypatia Collection is an innovative collaboration between the Madrid- based artist Nikoleta Sekulovic and London furniture company, Viaduct. This exhibition will consist of ten paintings of female nudes, each depicted with a chair selected by Viaduct from their collections.
Restoring one of the great subjects of Western Art to the intimacy of the ‘female gaze’, Sekulovic has established an international reputation with her restrained yet evocative paintings of unclothed women. The images are at once modern and timeless. The models, all known to the artist, and all fellow mothers, are given classical titles – the names of ancient Greek female poets and philosophers.
In her current body of work Sekulovic creates both a tension and a synergy from the juxtaposition of naked figures and elegant designer forms. The simple yet bold lines of the different Viaduct chairs represent both an extension of the sitter’s personality and a place in which to be still and present.
‘I have often observed that while the muse poses, she is, in a way, invited to just be in the present, suspended in time, something most mothers rarely get an opportunity to experience. It is unique and empowering to give her a space in time to be “still”, to be a muse, neither pretending or trying to please anyone, just being uniquely herself.’ – Nikoleta Sekulovic
It is fitting for the collection to be named after Hypatia, an Ancient Greek female philosopher, famous for being the greatest mathematician and astronomer of her time and overcoming the profound sexism of her society. Her boldness and powerfulness reflects the underlying vision of this collection.
