Australia: People and Places: Group Show

To coincide with the major exhibition of Australian Art at the Royal Academy, London, this autumn, the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery is mounting a survey show of modern Australian art celebrating the land and the people of the great southern continent. In Australia, man stands in a special and peculiar relationship to the land. The vastness of the terrain and the extremes of the climate create challenges not only for human existence but also for the artistic vision.

Australia: People and Places reveals some of the different artistic responses to this challenge. It gathers together important works by many of the leading Twentieth and Twenty-first Century Australian artists from both the 'European' and the Aboriginal traditions.

The exhibition will provide a rare chance to see paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures by such celebrated Australian artists as: Sidney Nolan R.A., Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, David Frazer, David Bromley, Dean Bowen, John Cato, Albert Namatjira, Clifford Possum, Emily Kngwarreye, Rover Thomas, Freddie Timms, John Mawurndjul, Owen Yalanga and Robert Campbell Jr.

The exhibition, specially curated by Rebecca Hossack, builds upon the gallery's tradition, sustained over twenty-five years, of exhibiting in London the very finest Aboriginal art as well as the most exciting Australian contemporary painting.

Hossack, born in Melbourne in 1955, was the Australian Cultural Attache in London from 1993 to 1997. She writes and lectures extensively on Aboriginal art, contributing articles on the subject to both the Macmillan Dictionary of Art and the Oxford History of Western Art.
