Retrospective Part II: Waters of the Nile: David Whitaker

David Whitaker (1938-2007) was a British abstract painter fascinated by the optical effects of colour. Over the course of a career that spanned five decades he pursued this fascination with inspired commitment, producing a wonderfully rich and substantial oeuvre.

Whitaker was one of the first British artists to have a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery - in 1970. In 1973, on the recommendation of Bridget Riley he received the Mark Rothko Memorial Award. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society.

Since his death in 2007 he has had important survey shows at the Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool and the Kingston Museum. A monograph, David Whitaker - Painting, was published by Black Dog in 2011. This is the second retrospective exhibition of his work at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery.
