Outside: Group Show

Following the gallery's exhibition at the prestigious Outsider Art Fair New York, the Mott Street gallery will host an exhibition of artists working outside of the established art scene.

The display will centre on Aboriginal paintings and fibre works, including natural ochre paintings by Lloyd Kwilla and baskets from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Paintings from the central desert will join the display as well as a collection of black and white prints from Borroloola and embroidered soft sculptures made from camp blankets dyed with Arrernte plants and rusted pieces of metal. 

To complement the non-Western works, the exhibition will showcase the work of several Western painters, including New Zealander Rob Tucker. Using paint sculpturally, Tucker's still lifes are painted on board and worked over with resin, red wine, graphite and spray paint. The result is a highly tactile finish, the works exploring colour as much as form. John Holcomb will be represented by his floral paintings. Working out of a small community in Kansas, Holcomb draws on the motifs of middle America and re-imagines them in a riotous palette. Holcomb's paintings join the exhibition following a sell-out collection at the Outsider Fair.
