Jason Shulman
Jason Shulman, a London-based British sculptor and photographer, uses his artistic practice to challenge the conventional boundaries of media, time, space, and known realities. Using long-exposure photography and sculptural experiments, his works evoke a heightened experience of uncertainty, surreality, pleasure, and loss. By incorporating optical illusions and scientific methodologies, Shulman questions our understanding of ordinary existence and the significance of cultural artefacts and fleeting moments in shaping our identities.
In his film series, Jason distils hours of footage to their quintessence, allowing viewers to witness them through a new and transformative lens. His approach involves temporal compression, a technique that expands, rather than reduces our experience as viewers by opening up new avenues of inquiry. His thought-provoking works invite viewers to explore new pathways of knowledge that challenge our understanding of the world around us.
Recent group exhibitions include ‘Daydreaming With Stanley Kubrick’, Somerset House, London (2014); ‘Out of Our Heads’, Shoreditch Town Hall, London (2014); La Maison Rouge, Paris (2013); The Wand, Berlin (2013); MONA, Tasmania, Australia (2012); The Rachofsky House, Dallas, Texas, USA (2011) and White Cube Gallery (Hoxton), London (2008). His work was also presented at Photo London, Somerset House, London (2017) and the Third Moscow Biennale, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow (2009).
