Gabriel Maralngurra

Overview

Gabriel Maralngurra was among the founding members of Injalak Arts in the 1980s, and continues to this day to be a keen ambassador and representative of the arts centre. As a key founder, Maralngurra’s vision and passion for creating a place where the Art History of West Arnhem Land can continue to be explored, developed and produced by others and younger generations is unique.

Heavily influenced by the rock art painting tradition from West Arnhem Land galleries, Gabriel is consistently referencing and working within this tradition whilst simultaneously producing contemporary conceptions. Gabriel attributes much of his artistic awareness to senior painter Thompson Yulidijirri, and his knowledge of stories, mythology, flora and fauna gives him a wide range of meaningful material to continue to work from.

Exhibited internationally in a high number of significant exhibitions, Gabriel Maralngurra’s work is also held in esteemed global collections such as, the National Museum of Australia and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
