Thompson Yulidjirri

Overview

Thompson Yulidijirri was a highly respected artist of the Kunwinjku people of western Arnhem Land who came to paint with Injalak Arts in the early 1990s.

Widely recognised for his broad understanding of rock painting and its relationship to bark painting, Yulidjirri became a mentor for many of the men around him, teaching them stories, techniques and cultural protocols whilst he worked. Lots of these men carried on to become some of the primary artists of Injalak arts, such as Gabriel Maralngurra, showing his influence and the importance of his mentorship.

Yulidijirri’s work has been exhibited extensively across the world and is held in a number of notable collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.
